Ratschläge für neue Lehrer

Nachdem ich in den letzten 15 Jahren Kinder zwischen 13 und 16 Jahren unterrichtet habe, fühle ich mich langsam sicher in meiner Arbeit als Lehrer. Es bedeutet aber nicht, dass ich nicht jeden Tag dazulerne. Immer wieder überraschen mich die Schüler, sowohl positiv als auch negativ.

In meinen Jahren als Lehrer habe ich etliche neue Kollegen bekommen und gesehen, wie sie entweder sich als Experten fühlen oder sich einfach nicht zurechtfinden im Schulsystem. Das richtige Verhalten ist wohl irgendwo dazwischen, denke ich. Glaube nicht dass dein Verhalten perfekt ist, aber glaube auch nicht, dass das Schulsystem perfekt ist. Als Lehrer kannst du den Schülern fachliches und soziales Wissen geben – trotz der Schwierigkeiten, die der Lehrplan und der Staat machen. DU BIST DIE WICHTIGSTE PERSON IN DER SCHULE.

Neulich habe ich eine gute Sammlung von Ratschlägen beim Blog Free Technology for Teachers gefunden. Auch für einigermassen erfahrene Lehrer sollte man solche Ratschläge durchlesen, sogar Selbstverständlichkeiten können nicht zu oft wiederholt werden.

Ich gehe natürlich davon aus, dass alle Junglehrer Englisch beherrschen!

Hier einige Beispiele:

Communicate with parents and don’t overplan.

Don’t forget to be yourself and show them your personality.  Kids and parents see right through the dog and pony show…so just be you take a deep breath and relax.

Ask lots of questions and make lots of mistakes.

Don’t try to be perfect.  Remember you know more than the students do.  Try to sit in on other teacher’s classes and see what you can learn.  Finally, you will get better.  Don’t panic.

Take control of your distance education and/or traditional courses by having an intimate knowledge of your LMS. Take responsibility, break down that LMS barrier to learning and KNOW your LMS. Learn it, love it, use it.

Be prepared. Have a plan for discipline infractions from DAY 1.  Follow it to the letter for the first two weeks. Kids will get the message that you mean what you say and say what you mean. Call parents during the first week to introduce yourself and you will get a feel for how supportive and responsive your parents will be.  Also, try to make time to call for good things.  That way when a negative phone call must be made, you already have a rapport with the parent.

Know your stuff, especially if you teach teenagers. They can spot a fake a mile away. Love what you teach. If you love your subject area, that love will inevitably rub off on your students.

Get to know two people in your school as soon as possible: the secretary and the custodian. These two support staff often work behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly and can be your most valuable resource.

When you hear «this is how we do things» don’t be afraid to ask «why?»

Ich finde jedenfalls, dass diese Ratschläge wirklich nützlich sind, nicht nur für Neulinge. Vielleicht glauben wir Erfahrene dass wir mehr können als wir eigentlich schaffen?
